Ready, Set, and Back to School!

August brings excitement filled with new friends, backpacks, and the return of early morning alarms. Before the first school bell rings, a few simple healthy habits can help children and families stay energized, focused, and ready for a successful school year.

Rebuild the Routine:

  • Sleep Time: Shift bedtime earlier by 15-20 minutes every few nights in the two weeks before school starts.
  • Wake Up: Reintroduce a consistent wake-up time so the body clock can adjust.
  • Healthy Eating: Nutrient-dense breakfasts and lunches help students stay focused and energized.
  • Screen Curfews: Tighten total daily screen time and set a firm evening cut-off time to protect sleep.

Pack Smart and Move Safely:

  • Backpack Check: Choose backpacks with padded, adjustable straps. Keep the weight to no more than 10-15% of the child’s body weight and have them always wear both shoulder straps.
  • Walkers and Bikers: Practice the route together, review safe street crossings, double check that helmets fit properly, and check that bicycles are in good working condition.
  • Bus Riders: Review the rules for getting on and off the bus, staying seated, and keeping a safe distance from the bus.
  • Car Riders: Confirm car seats, boosters, and seat belts fit properly and are used during every ride, even short ones.

Health Checks:

  • Immunizations and Physicals: Required for enrollment and sports participation.
  • Vision and Hearing: Both senses are critical for successful learning. Schedule these screenings before school starts.
  • Medication and Allergy Plans: Update your child’s records and share them with the school nurse.

Healthy habits and safe routines don’t need to be complicated. Small daily choices, like eating a nutritious breakfast, getting enough sleep, wearing a helmet, or using a crosswalk, can help children stay healthy, safe, and ready to learn. Here’s to a happy, healthy, and successful school year!
