July: When Every Bite is a National Celebration!

What do horseradish, berries, watermelon, baked beans, ice cream, cold deli salads, hotdogs, and peaches all have in common? You would be correct if you said they all have a national day during July. Beyond this curious detail, these foods offer us a chance to look at our favorite summer foods in a healthier way.

July 4th, our Independence Day, deserves top billing, but July is a wonderful time to celebrate with the foods that have their special place this month. During backyard grilling, picnics in the park, and no-oven dinners, there are plenty of ways to enjoy some summertime favorites.
It’s hard to think about summer without thinking about ice cream. This sweet treat is delicious on its own, but goes well with a slice of peach or berry pie or with berries sprinkled on top. Additionally, it counts as a source of your daily calcium requirement, but because of its higher sugar and fat content, consume it in moderation.

Backyard grilling and summertime picnics would not be complete without some of these foods. Hotdogs on the grill, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, and watermelon are usual staples. Fortunately, these tasty foods are packed with fiber, nutrients, and water, making them guilt-free indulgences. Look for low-sodium, nitrate-free, and chicken or pork sausages for a healthier versioned hotdog. Adding horseradish to your salads and sandwiches is a delicious way to recognize this root vegetable that also has healthy perks like aiding digestion, supporting the immune system, and reducing inflammation.

With so many food holidays packed into one month, July is a perfect time to appreciate all the flavors associated with summer and remember that eating well doesn’t mean missing out.
