Celebrate America’s 250th Safely!

This Independence Day marks a truly historic milestone, America’s 250th birthday! On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, giving birth to a new nation. Two hundred and fifty years later, Americans from coast to coast will gather to celebrate with parades, cookouts, and, of course, fireworks. As we mark this extraordinary milestone, let’s make safety part of the celebration.

Fun Fact: The 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is known as the United States Semiquincentennial, a once-in-a-generation celebration that won’t happen again until the year 2276.

MORE HEALTH encourages everyone to enjoy the festivities safely. Fireworks are a beloved July 4th tradition, but they come with real risks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), thousands of people are treated in emergency rooms each year for firework-related injuries. Children and young adults are especially vulnerable. Professional displays are always the safest way to enjoy a fireworks show.

America’s 250th birthday is a wonderful opportunity to teach children about our nation’s history while modeling the importance of making safe choices during the holiday celebrations. If you do use consumer fireworks, follow these safety tips.

  • Never allow young children to handle or ignite fireworks, including sparklers, which can reach temperatures up to 2,000°F.
  • Always have a responsible adult supervise fireworks activities.
  • Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
  • Light one firework at a time, back up immediately, and keep a safe distance.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Do not attempt to relight fireworks that did not fully ignite.
  • Soak used fireworks thoroughly in water before throwing them out.
  • Check local laws and ordinances and verify that fireworks are legal in your area.
  • Never engage in celebratory gunfire. Bullets fired into the air eventually come down and can seriously injure or kill someone.
  • Do not use fireworks if impaired by drugs or alcohol, and do not allow anyone who is impaired to handle or light fireworks.

Summertime reminder: This summer, much of Florida is experiencing dry conditions, increasing the risk of fires. Be mindful of your outdoor surroundings and use extra caution with fireworks, open flames, and sparks, especially near dry grass, brush, and other vegetation.
